Baroness Emmuska Orczy (1865–1947), Hungarian author wrote The Scarlet Pimpernel (1905) which begins thus; "Paris: September, 1792. A surging, seething, murmuring crowd of beings that are human only in name, for to the eye and ear they seem naught but savage creatures, animated by vile passions and by the lust of vengeance and of hate.

An actor friend put her in contact with the husband and wife acting team of Fred Terry and Julia Neilson, who were looking for a new romantic drama. The Scarlet Pimpernel seemed to fit the bill and a production was planned. Working with her husband, Emmuska fit her book into play form. Baroness Emmuska Orczy—artist, playwright, and author—was born in Tarnaörs, Hungary, in 1865.Although all her manuscripts were written in English, she did not learn the language until she and her parents, Baron Felix and Countess Emma Orczy, moved to London when she was fifteen.

When I first sat down to write this, I thought it was going to be a personal response to Baroness Emmuska Orczy’s novel, The Scarlet Pimpernel. And I suppose it is. But it definitely came in a different way than I had expected. In the end it turned out to be a musing on the theme of trust, as related to Pimpernel of course. Her father was a friend of such composers as Wagner‚ Liszt‚ and Gounod; the family was connected to Franz Josef of the Austrian-Hungarian Empire.
